There are several different types of filling materials available to you. Composite and silver amalgam fillings are the most widely used. A composite filling is a white restoration made to closely match the color of your teeth. Unlike metal fillings, composite fillings are mercury free. Moreover, they lack the metallic luster of silver fillings, making them more appealing cosmetically for restorations needed in the more visible areas of your teeth
Not only can composite fillings restore newly diagnosed cavities, but they can also replace existing silver fillings that are subject to recurring decay. With proper care, composite fillings will last a long time, but as with most dental restorations they are not always permanent and may someday require replacement.
Composite fillings require just one appointment to restore your tooth to its original shape and function. Sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures is sometimes experienced shortly after composite fillings are placed; however, this usually subsides after several days.
